In addition a surround sound version will be available in January, the first to utilize an encoding process developed by Seattle Audio Imaging Labs, Inc (SAIL). Although sound delivered on a Dolby ProLogic theater system was designed for movies and not CD playback, Sail claims their encoding system eliminates "dynamic frequncy response aberrations" which can impede sound quality. The surround version of OYE uses two processes, REcode and ENcode, during the mastering process: REcode renders two-track material in enhanced surround sound while ENcode enables surround sound for multitrack material. The result is supposed to envelop the listener, providing them with five-speaker sound quality using only two speakers. In addition KEYS TO ASCENSION VOLUME 2 has been released. MOT * * * * * * * * * * ________________ = YESSHOWS HUB = ---------------- FROM PERU TO MISOURRI...HELP! ============================= From: danisol@chavin.rcp.net.pe "Carlos Benavides" Hello, I am from Lima-Peru, South America. I have been a Yes fan since 1974and have never seen them in concert (Yes has never performed in Peru), so attending to a Yes Show would be making a dream come true. On Nov 22 I'm travelling to USA and will stay for aprox. 10 days. Fate makes my trip coincide with a Yes Tour, so I have to do something !!!!!! I'm staying at New Jersey; unfortunately Yes has already performed there and in the cities nearby, so in order to catch them, Im obliged to make a trip by plane which complicates things, but Im willing to do it if I find somebody who gives me a hand buying me a ticket, and if possible, picking me at the airport and taking me to the concert (I know Im asking for a lot but need that support). Checking the Yes Tour Dates, I think the gig at St. Louis, Missouri on Nov 25 would be the most appropiate for me to go, so I hope there is a generous soul who can help making the dream of a Peruvian Yes fan come true. Thanks. Anybody at St. Louis (or in other city, perhaps Dallas or Tulsa) who is willing to help me, please send me an e-mail. Thanks again. And I heard a million voices..........answering me. I am in a quandary and really need some hints on what to do. Yes are coming to Dallas to the Bronco Arena on Friday Nov. 28. It is too late for this to go on the NFTE issues and I am really aiming for a one on one answer anyway. I would like to receive some suggestions on a problem. Any help would be appreciated. I am having difficulties going to see Yes. I have been a long time Yes fan (since the first Yes album) . I can not drive due to a combination of eyesight problems (I can't gauge distances) and a severe left/right problem (dyslexia). and I am stuck about 100 miles away! I also can not find anyone to take me (I will pay for ticket and gas).I not only want to see them, but I have something I would love to give to each member. As a means of saying "Thanks" for all the great years and personal influences. I am an artist and have done a watercolor of each individual members. Each 6 paintings are 15"x520" in size. I also have some writings I have done that I would like to especially give to Jon because he influenced me in the way I write. What I don't know is how to give these to Yes and be 100%assured that they will receive them. If I do not get to see Yes this time around, I understand :( But I wondered if you have any suggestions. at least to get the paintings to them...and somehow let me be assured it reached them. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Two weeks ago, Jon joined the efforts of other musicians, celebrities and Native American leaders including Peter Frampton, Steve Morse (guitarist for Deep Purple), Albert Lee (rock guitarist), Jon Trudell (Native American poet/musician) and Roberta Blackgoat (Big Mountain Dine [Navajo] Elder resisting forced relocation by the US government as documented in the Academy Award-winning movie, "Broken Rainbow"). This powerful group of individuals acts as the Advisory Board for The Earth Force Network, a network marketing company setting the standard for corporate responsibility. I recognized 'the calling' and immediately contacted Wendy by email offering to do an album using her words, the same words that had moved Jon, sight unseen, as lyric... Wendy loved the idea and now the album is almost complete! We are waiting for a few 'specially invited guests' to respond and then will complete mixing etc... Several very interesting people have already played on the recordings... Ray Gomez (Guitarist with Stanley Clarke, Steps Ahead, Patrick Moraz...), Adam Lieb (Guitarist with Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists), Jeff Blanks (Guiar, Bass & Keyboards with Electric Minstrel), Curt Vig (Guitarist with Ruff-n-Redy, Cupid), David Bagsby (Lap Steel Guitar & Synthesizers with Xen, Aviary, Patrick Moraz...), Pam Fleming (Flugelhorn and Trumpet with Fearless Dreamer, Extatomatique, Patrick Moraz...), Dan Gibson (Keyboards with Power Windows, Ten Ton Tide...), Wendy Vig (Lyrics and Flute with the Solano College Orchestra) ;-) After receiving Wendy's words on color xeroxes with Jon's beautiful watercolors... it was wonderful!!! I wrote melodies to all the poems in about two and a half hours! The melodies literally leapt out of Wendy's words combined with Jon's serene paintings!! The actual musical composition and studio production has also moved at a rapid pace. My friend and collaborator, Perry Alexander Montauredes have been working together the past two and a half years on several projects... we have a piece of music up for the new James Bond film... it is still 'under consideration' is what my lawyer tells me. Perry has also been co-arranging my opera, UN1SON with me which will be completed after the production of 'Fountains of Gold' is complete. Perry is a multi-instrumentalist, a vocalist, songwriter, composer, producer, arranger, engineer, script writer.... ughhh am I leaving anything out? Oh yes, he was in a couple of interesting bands, the Rebbekka Frame with Nicky Garrett of U.K.Subs, also the Dolphin Alert with Adam Lieb (who appears on this project). The website for Jon & Wendy's book, 'Fountains of Gold', is at http://www.waxfiles.com/fountains.html. Heaven Bone Press is the publisher (PoetSteve@compuserve.com) and the book, 'Fountains of Gold' is currently available through Jon Anderson's charity at UNICEF called 'Opioworld', http://members.aol.com/opiowrld/opioworld.html. and at the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in St. Louis. To reserve your copy of the CD (advance orders are only $10) let me know! Bye for now... I first saw Yes on the 1976 Tour at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ. It was 100ø that day. I took a bus over from the NYC Port Authority with my friend John Weiler. We were just finished with freshman year of high school. A car accident kept us trapped in the Lincoln Tunnel so long that people started to faint on the bus from the heat and bad air. When we finally got to the stadium, there was about a battalion of police off to one side and the noise of much breaking glass. The line of fans was about 10 abreast and went around the stadium. The police had bullhorns and were telling people "no glass inside the stadium" and people were draining bottles of hard liquor on the spot and then breaking the bottles against the wall. Right in front of the cops, this guy wanders up the line yelling "Acid, acid!" I was just a kid, somewhat scared and feeling like I was on the adventure of a lifetime. When we got inside, in addition to the great set that you recall so well, there was a hot air balloon tethered over the stage, with the cover FROM TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS on it! The opening was the Poussette Dart band ("When you hit me on the head with your beer bottle, something in my chemistry changed . . . "). Between the opening and Yes, there were fireworks. One of the rocket stands fell over during launch and a rocket shot across the infield and blew up under a car! Finally, true dark fell around 9:00 PM and Yes played the wonderful show you remember. During the battle scenes in "Gates of Delirium", the laser (electric green, dark blue) was shot into the audience in random, staccato bursts. Later, during "Soon", the laser fanned out and spun over the audience, who craned up hands over their heads to touch the light. God, that was great. One sour note, there was a bad fight down front and a guy got knifed and died. It prompted the closing of Roosevelt Stadium, so that Yes was the last concert ever played there. I remember reading that they canceled Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead shows the next week. My friend John had to get home by midnight, so we hopped the bus back to NYC and the bus driver was listening to the show simulcast on one of the NY FM stations. That way we got to hear Ritual. I still remember John asking: "Are they going to play that part about 'Getting over over-hanging trees . . . ?'" That was my first Yesshow, but not my last. It was one the best times I've ever had in my life and certainly will never forget. Justice * * * * * * * * * * "OPEN YOUR EYES" IS AN EXPERIMENT SONG ====================================== From: "shtst1+@pitt.edu" "Samuel Theiner" I haven't seen anybody mention this, so I've taken it upon myself to bring it up! If you have a moral problem with bootlegs, don't read further. Ahh, we're Yes fans. . . we LIVE for bootlegs! [Personally we prefer tape trading over purchasing bootlegs. --MOT] I just returned from a cyber-excursion to the YesWorld homepage. I listened to the excerpts of the new song, "Open Your Eyes", and I realized, with great delight "Hey, I know this song!" Of course! This was a song performed by the short-lived Chris Squire Experiment! I have a video bootleg of their San Jose show. I loved "Open Your Eyes" from the first. It has an irresistibly catchy yet somewhat skewed vocal line. . . classic Chris! Of course, from the little snippets I heard at the YesWorld site, I can tell that it has been "Yessed" up considerably. Of course, this opens the question: if Chris and Billy have given their best Experiment song to Yes for the new album, this probably means that a Squire solo album will not be coming out anytime soon (i.e. within five years) if ever. While a Squire-a-holic like myself might consider that disturbing, on the other hand, Squire/Sherwood songs are a good place to mine for fresh energetic material. I have not, obviously, heard the other new songs, as I am writing this on October 21, breathlessly awaiting the show in Pittsburgh on Nov. 2. As long as I'm here (virtually speaking), a moment on my soapbox: I WAS terribly sorry to see Rabin leave the band. Talk was a monumental album, a great achievement, and the tour was first rate. Of course, that's ancient history now, and these things happen. I was NOT, on the other hand, terribly sorry to see Wakeman leave. Not that I dislike him. But he was out of fresh ideas around the time of Journey. He's been writing the same material again and again for his solo albums (with the exception of CRIMINAL RECORD; of course, that has Squire on it 8-) and his staleness was dragging the band down. Just IMHO, of course. I would be disappointed if I didn't get flamed for that. 8-) Anyway, Nov.2: It's a YES NIGHT IN PITTSBURGH. (Penguin fans will get that 8-) -Sam Theiner * * * * * * * * * * HEARING PROTECTION: YES ======================= From: "tomis@MICROSOFT.com" "Tom Isenberg" A recent post mentioned that the fellow got ringing in the ears from a Yes concert. Me too. So let me stress the importance of wearing ear plugs at any loud event. I got tinnitus (a constant ringing in the ears) from a Yes concert in 1984 because I was not wearing ear plugs. Tony's synthesizer solo did it. ;-) Fortunately, it doesn't bother me much, but for some people it can be very distressing (there are treatments to help these people cope; check out: http://www.earinfo.com/ctac/index1.html.) The bottom line is, buy some professional rubber ear plugs specifically designed for hearing protection (not for swimming) at a hardware store or gun shop and always carry them with you. Buy them as gifts for your concert-going friends. If you find yourself in need of them and don't have them at hand, at least use bits of wadded up napkins (a.k.a. "spitballs.") A side benefit is that ear plugs screen out crowd noise, reduce sound distortion, and actually make for a much more pleasant listening experience. And if you do have ringing in the ears that lasts for more than 24 hours, get to a ear/nose/throat doctor right away. The "fresher" a case of tinnitus is, the easier it is to treat. Finally, in this regulated, litigious society, it won't be too long before OSHA or someone sues a band for not warning on the ticket about dangerous volume levels. Also, it would be great if bands sold logo'd ear plugs along with T-shirts and programs. They could put the logo right on the plastic vial that holds the plugs. Mike T, please take this up with the band. ;-) --- Tom * * * * * * * * * * YES ON TOTP2 - OR WAS IT? ========================= From: "jeremyw@nagalp.nag.co.uk" Just thought I'd share a funny moment from Saturday afternoon's TV here in the UK. There's a music nostalgia show called TOTP2 which trawls the archives of (amongst others) a long-running chart show called "Top of the Pops". I was watching on Saturday when the announcer intoned: "And now, to celebrate lead singer Jon Anderson's birthday, here is the only performance on 'Top of the Pops' of seventies supergroup Yes". Immediate cut to a singer who didn't look at all like Jon Anderson, with a nasal, folkie twang that certainly didn't sound like him. Up comes the caption: "Yes - The Hangman and the Papist, 1971". For a moment, I was speechless: Where did this song come from? Who was the singer? (Peter Banks flashed through my mind for some reason) Where was that distinctive bass sound? (Camera pulls out to reveal other members of the group, all hirsute, but almost certainly not Yes, even under all that hair). And then, as the keyboard player briefly flashed into view, the pieces fell into place. The song title was correct, but the group was actually The Strawbs, featuring one Rick Wakeman on keys. I ranted at the screen in a fashion that made my daughter move uncomfortably down the sofa. The song, by the way, sounded dreadful. And I'm sure I saw Rick reaching for a *paint roller* to manipulate the keys - some new (old) technique for scales or smears, perhaps? Jeremy * * * * * * * * * * YES FASHION STATEMENT ===================== From: "sergio@cygnus.corp.sgi.com" "Sergio DeAcha" Last week my wife was paging thru "Allure" magazine. She came across an article about Fashion "Yesterday and Today." On page 29 there was a picture of some celebrity woman (Whom I didn't recognize) wearing a YES T-shirt. She was used for the "Fashion Today" comparison. Kind of nice that Yes is making a comeback at all levels... The albums I saw included: GOING FOR THE ONE YESSHOWS YESSONGS BIG GENERATOR 90125 CLOSE TO THE EDGE CLASSIC YES All were in excellent condition and wrapped in protective plastic. Prices varied. Their phone number is (813) 442-4655. Mon-Sat 9:30am - 10:00pm. Sun 12-6pm About the Tour: From the recent reviews posted in NFTE, the new YES tour sounds incredible. Thanks to all of you who are posting reviews of the shows. I'm looking forward to seeing some tour pictures posted at the NFTE website soon. I'd also like to know more about Ivan Khoroshev--perhaps a page dedicated to him, similar to the "Who is Billy Sherwood?" page. A page for Ivan is probably already in the works, but just thought I'd ask. I'd also like some clarification on the "three-year" tour I've seen hinted about. Somewhere along the way I missed this detail and would like more clarification. If this is indeed a three-year tour, then I'd dearly love to see YES come to Florida in 1998. Here's my wish list for tour cities: Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa (saw them at the Sundome on the "Talk" tour in 1994), or Miami. Just in case YES management is reading, there is a great venue in Ft. Myers called the Lee Civic Center (seats up to 8000). The admin office is (941) 543-8368. I live in Naples, 175 miles south of Tampa and 30 miles south of Ft. Myers, but heck, if YES comes to Florida and plays any (or all) major cities, I'll take a week of vacation and attend each one! In 1982, I purchased his ANIMATION record and was fortunate to see his solo tour at Camp Fortune, a lovely outdoor venue in a ski valley just outside Ottawa, Canada. I was particularly moved by the title track "Animation", a song that describes Jon's emotions and observations during the birth of his daughter Deborah. One year later I was fortunate enough to experience the birth of my own daughter, Sonja Katherine Seiler, and on the drive home from the hospital at 2:00 AM I listened to "Animation" on the tape player with tears of joy. It is now 14 years later, and Sonja has independently taken an extreme liking to Jon's solo music, due primarily to his unique voice and lyrical songs. One of her favourite pieces is the "Chagall Duet" from the CHANGE WE MUST CD, and her dream is to sing this song together with Jon some time (she also is blessed with a great singing voice). Recently she asked me which song it was that I had played after her birth, and I played "Animation" for her. It was another magical moment, and by the end of the song she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Sonja is just starting to get into YES music, and already has a favourite in "Starship Trooper". One of her dreams will be fulfilled soon as the two of us will see YES in Toronto on their current tour. My thanks to NFTE for their posting of the concert set lists and reviews. It has allowed me to make a tape of the concert songs for my daughter to become familiar with the music prior to the concert. The youth that are listening to YES music and attending their concerts today are a testament to the fact that good music is ageless. My, just turned nine year old, daughter Rhiannon went to the show on October 30th at the Beacon Theater here in NYC. After reading the posts to the newsgroup and other assorted opinions about noise levels, rowdy fans and falling asleep during the show, I was prepared for just about anything. After a STELLAR performance by the band, with lyrics and guitar licks ringing in our heads, I turned to my daughter and said, "So honey, how's your ears? Was it too loud?" She looked me straight in the eyes and with a deadpan expression on her face said, "Dad, they make more noise in my school lunchroom!!!" As to my review, all I can say is SEE THE SHOW!!!! It's one I'll remember for a long, long time... What a great time to be a Yes fan!! Best to all, Tom Brydelsky * * * * * * * * * * YES IN VEGAS! ============= From: "NvdaEmpire@aol.com" Several weeks ago, when I first heard that KTA II was coming out soon (and is now delayed according to local music stores) I said to my girlfriend, Becke, "You know that with a new album comes a tour" and low and behold, I get the call today... "Hi, Adam, "Yes" is that band that you love so much, right? Well, I just heard on the radio that they are coming here to Las Vegas on December 6th and that tickets go on sale in one hour." I literally dropped the phone and sat down to collect my thoughts. I grabbed the phone and said, "Whatever you do, don't make plans for that night!" and I ran down to my local ticket master to get a pair of tickets. As it turns out, they will be playing at the Hard Rock Hotel here in Vegas which only seats 1,400 people. Of course this makes the ticket prices for seats cost $80.00 each...expensive, but worth every penny! Granted, this is not quite the 14,000 people that attended their concert here for the Talk tour, the 18,000 people who attended the 5 1/2 hour concert they did on the UNION Tour (which, contrary to many reports, was simply awesome here in Vegas) or the stadiums full of people they performed for not so long ago, but a more intimate group will be great too. I even said to my sweetheart, "I can't believe I didn't know they were coming!!! I need to start reading `Notes From The Edge' more often I guess!" Thanks guys for your continuing efforts to document the journals of the greatest group of musicians of all time...YES! /\dam Sternberg Las Vegas, Nevada * * * * * * * * * * PATIENCE PAYS OFF (AT LEAST IN THE SF BAY AREA) =============================================== From: "James.Graham@Schwab.COM" "Graham, James" This is a multipurpose message. Firstly, anyone who would like to meet up at the Warfield with a Yeshead and his extremely tolerant wife :-) drop me a line here. Secondly, I discovered something about the way BASS seems to be handling Their event ticket sales lately. This isn't helpful now, but for future events, people may want to keep this in mind. This may not apply beyond the Bay Area. Apparently, BASS, in their infinite wisdom, released seating in a most Unorthodox manner for the Yes shows at the Warfield. Unable to get through on the phone (enduring a barrage of endless rings, busy signals and "We're sorry, all circuits are busy now"), I jammed down to pick up tix at the local outlet, only to discover that they didn't take my preferred method of payment when I asked for two tickets to the 12th. When I got back with ca$h, of course the seats they had pulled up for me (which were on the floor) were gone. I asked, "Okay, can I get two tickets for the 13th?" "Uh, there is no show on the 13th," he told me. Fascinating. Some tickets for the 13th went up for grabs on Friday night, with the premise that they'd go on sale this morning (11/2). "Well, sometimes what they do is they wait for a show to sell out before they release the next night." The first thing that amazed me was that there was no physical line at the ticket outlet.... Another Yeshead joined me after about five minutes; yet another after about twenty, and we watched people come up and order tickets for the Rolling Stones (talk about expen$ive!) and other various and sundry events, with the (very cool) ticketeer checking for new dates in between the other orders. "We're down to balcony seats, they should be selling out any minute now..." Cool. We'll wait. Five minutes later... "Whoa! Floor seats just came up!" No kidding! Two, please. The 13th had not yet gone on sale, and floor seats came up. Yes, I realise they're GA, but hey, floor is floor! Apparently we caught the _third wave_ of floor seating that morning. It would appear that BASS is releasing the seats slowly in order to inhibit scalping. In my mind, this is a good thing. So in the future, if all dates have not presented themselves on line, hang around and wait for the next dates to appear. You may be in for a pleasant surprise. Hopefully, Yes will get their third day at the Warfield; this has evidently not been confirmed yet. [Yes will be in San Jose on December 14. --MOT] Thanks to NFTE and YesWorld for providing sale date information; forewarned is forearmed, even if online tickets DID vanish into vapour instantly. Hope to meet some new BA Yesheads at this show. I know he is credited with producing, but >does anyone know if he did any uncredited backup singing. I thought I >heard his voice and distinctive pronunciation on the word 'Hello' in >particular. I listened very closely on my headphones to both the album version and the remix (not the "a capella" remix, but the remix from "Twelve Inches On Tape"), and I noticed the same thing! It really does sound like Trevor Horn singing the bottom harmony parts of the "goodbye bad" and "hello heaven" phrases. As I was listening closely, I also noticed that there seems to be a _violin_ playing during parts of the song. (This is especially obvious on the remix.) Did Eddie Jobson play violin on this song? I know there was some juggling between Tony Kaye and Eddie Jobson before Tony became a full member of the 90125 lineup. Does anyone know if Eddie did in fact play on the 90125 album? For her, up until then, life had not been "Absolutely Fabulous," though a TV series of the same name is said to be partly modeled on her life. ___________________________________________________________________________ Movie fans first "met" Nina Carter -- now Mrs. Nina Carter Wakeman, wife of the rock keyboard legend, Rick Wakeman -- in the John Landis film "An American Werewolf in London." Early on in the film, David (David Naughton), the main character is staying with Nurse Alex (Jenny Agutter) and suddenly on the television screen appears a commercial by "Naughty Nina." In it, she says that she will "reveal all" about her life in Sunday's News of the World. Little did "Naughty Nina" realize that years later, she would be touring British churches revealing all not only about her past life, but also her present, as a follower of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But first, she went to hell and back! Nina Carter was one of the original "Page Three Girls" in the Sun newspaper in London -- you have to be British to understand what that means -- and was earning huge daily fees as a top glamour model. Fame and fortune were what the public saw, but real story was that her life had become entangled with drugs, debt, despair and nearly ended in premature death. Born in Solihull, on the outskirts of Birmingham, England, Penny Mollett -- that is her real name -- eventually moved with her family to Tuckton, near Christchurch on the South Coast. "Even at this early age, I was becoming a bit of a tearaway," Nina told Derek Green, editor of Britain's Direction magazine in a recent interview. "I remember my parents thinking I was at the Girl Guides, when I was really walking with the boys along the river bank." Following another move, her father fell while carrying a bag of potatoes and damaged the base of his spine. This caused a form of sclerosis, and he spent much of his time in bed for the next three years. Although he was so ill, he wanted the best for his daughter, and so arranged for her to take Confirmation classes at the local Episcopalian church. "I did not understand much of what was happening", she admits, "most of it went over my head. But somehow I think God hooked onto me then, although it did not mean much to me until many years later." Her rebellious life continued, but then, at the age of fifteen, something traumatic occurred that she says she will never forget. Continuing her interview with Derek Green, she said that she and her mother were with her father who was very ill. Her mother fainted and her brother carried her out of the room. While they were gone, her father died in her arms. "This changed the course of my life," Nina admits. "I always knew my father wanted me to be special, and I felt I wanted to leave home, and make my own way. On the advice of my Academy teacher, I entered a beauty competition." Success for her was instant. She was quickly crowned Miss Bournemouth, Miss Southampton and Miss Poole. Then she became embroiled in what eventually became a scandal with a local councilor who offered to sponsor her to enter Miss Great Britain. After a difficult cruise together, Nina became so annoyed with what had occurred, that she went to a store and ordered a number of clothes on his account. "I did not realize," Nina added," that he had alerted the store to this possibility, and as I marched out with the goods, the store detective stopped me." She spent seven hours in the Bournemouth Police Station; accused of stealing a car the councilor had made available to her, and obtaining the goods, falsely. "The newspapers loved it -- most carried headlines about the Beauty Queen and the Councilor." However, the publicity worked for her good and she was invited to join a modeling agency in London. She changed her name to Nina Carter and was in great demand for the Pirelli Calendars, best swimwear catalogues and TV ads. This was followed by her entering the world of topless modeling and soon she was a household name. Many of the pictures were taken in places like Indonesia, Jamaica and many other exotic locations around the world. Nina then changed direction in her career and began working for David Bailey, with her pictures appearing in such magazines as "Cosmopolitan," "She," "Vogue," and "Woman's Own." She said, "This was prestigious work, but prestige does not pay the bills. The money dropped to about $25 an hour, and the bills began to mount. I realized that my life was going downhill." BLONDE ON BLONDE -- THE 1970's ANSWER TO THE SPICE GIRLS Just as it seemed hopeless, she was asked if she could sing. Although she really wasn't a world class singer, she said that she could. So she teamed up with another Page Three model, Jilly Johnson, to produce a recording. They called themselves "Blonde on Blonde." The British comedy series, "Absolutely Fabulous," is said to be loosely based on the lives of these two models. Their recording company sent them to Japan, where they were heralded as stars. They lived it up on the top floor of the Hilton Hotel in Tokyo. "They found themselves staying up most of the night, and trying to work all day," says Derek Green. "They realized that all the others in the same set were on drugs to keep them going. Soon they followed suit. "Nina quickly found herself spending huge sums to maintain her habit. She lost her apartment and car. She faded to 77 pounds in weight, and then her throat shut, and she nearly choked. An emergency operation led to four months in the hospital." Said Nina, "I realized that I had to make a break with my old life." She took a live-in job in the country, where she cleaned and exercised a horse. The lady of the house began to trust her to look after her son, and soon Nina's confidence returned. But still, her drug addict friends were constantly hounding her. She battled on to start her own cosmetic's business, leading her into people's homes where she had the opportunity to share her beauty secrets with housewives who felt inadequate and insecure. ROCKED BY RICK Little did Nina realize how her life was to change after receiving a phone call from Rick Wakeman, formerly of YES and arguably the world's greatest rock keyboardist. He invited her to make a backing track. She decided to do it, and Rick liked it. While in London, Rick, who was separated from his second wife, took her to see the musical "Barnum" and they sat and talked until 5:00 AM. Not long after this, came another call from Rick, inviting Nina to the launch of the recording in Cannes. Rick had a reputation for being a wild man of rock and he had "drunk for England" during that time. As Nina had suffered from drug abuse, he had suffered from alcohol abuse and he recovered miraculously from three heart attacks. Yet somehow they were drawn together and began to fall in love. Naturally, the tabloid press hounded them with headlines like, "Drug Addict and Alcoholic Romance." Said Nina, "The Press just threw us together." Then, as the press likes also to do, it did all it could to split them up again, with lurid distorted stories and unpleasant photographs. Despite all of this, Jemma was born a perfect baby -- the first girl in the Wakeman family for 250 years. So Rick and Nina decided that they wanted to get married, but faced many difficulties finding a minister who would marry them. Eventually, a United Reform Minister agreed to marry them and a huge rock and roll wedding took place. Among the star-studded group attending, was Robert Powell, who played Jesus in the TV series, "Jesus of Nazareth." When asked if he was with the Bride or Groom, Powell laughed and said, "Season ticket!" The Christian love and concern of this pastor was the start of their journey back to God. Rick had become a believer as a teenager and was baptized at South Harrow Baptist Church and was also a Sunday School teacher. The minister knew of Rick's upbringing and asked him to write a hymn for a special occasion. Other hymns followed and then, one day, Rick shut himself away for a whole 24 hours. Thus emerged "The Gospels," which has since been added considerably to and was performed last Easter at five Southern California concerts. Rick was now studying the Bible and becoming more and more inspired to use his talent that he says was "on loan from God." Eventually, they moved from Camberley in Surrey, to the Isle of Man, and started attending the Broadway Baptist Church in Douglas. But then came a major crisis. "Rick was away, and Nina found herself with just one week to solve a major financial problem," said Derek Green. "She drove to the local golf course, being booked for speeding on the way. When she arrived, she booked a lesson with a trainer. After completely mis-hitting a number of balls the trainer realized there was something very wrong. He stopped and told her how God had completely changed his life. When she got in her car, he got in beside her, put his hand on her head and prayed for her." Said Nina, "I felt so embarrassed, but he just seemed to know all about me -- he prayed so sincerely -- and I just went home, and locked the door, took the phone off the hook, and cried and prayed. I said, 'God, I cannot think why you would want to help me. I have abused myself, you can see right through me.' I thought about my Father's death, and my sin, and then thought about my lovely husband and children (they also have a son called Oscar) and home. I prayed and cried and laughed for at least an hour. Then I said, 'God, regarding this problem -- please help!'" Just after this, the phone rang at their home. A person who had owed Rick a lot of money from more than 10 years before was offering to repay it. The need was met. Nina rang the golf coach and went with him to a meeting where she heard someone giving a testimony. She went forward for prayer and said a prayer of commitment to Jesus Christ. Nina, who is about to start writing a book about her life, devotes much of her time now speaking to women's groups and giving a program about make-up and beauty, at which she talks about the "inner beauty" of her Christian faith. "I just find God's love so overwhelming," she said. "If I ever move away from Him, He always draws me back. Although there are so many millions of us, He can reach out to use as individuals. If we read the Bible we will find the right route." By the way, Rick and Nina Wakeman are hosting a trip to Israel from May 3-10, 1998. Warren" Most YES fans with internet access who wanted to know the setlist of the current tour probably already do (for those who don't, stop reading this message ;-). I've heard some griping about the setlist (as of the first week of the tour). On its face, it doesn't seem like a bad setlist at all to me. Of course, there are a few changes I'd like to see (maybe you would as well?). Perhaps Yes will change the songs chosen this summer or sometime on a second leg of the tour. Here are a few humble suggestions: 1) Drop the solos (all of them except during other songs... this includes Steve). Not even the Yes fanatics want to hear the Alan White drum solo (only) from RITUAL, or the WHITEFISH stuff anymore, ok (not that we don't admire the musicians). We've seen it before, and there's nothing else to prove here, guys. You get the point... 2) Drop "Heart of the Sunrise." With time constraints, you can't play all the old (and starting to become tired) classics. Something has got to go to make room, and I vote that something is HOTS. 3) Add "I am Waiting" from TALK or something else good from recent eras/albums (ABWH, UNION, TALK, KEYS TO ASCENSION #1, etc.). "The More We Live, Let Go" or "Say Goodbye" would also be appropriate methinks (giving Billy Sherwood more of a chance to shine on stage). 4) For that matter, play at least one more song from either KTA II or OPEN YOUR EYES. The opening show supposedly had another song from OYE, but that has been replaced with "Heart of the Sunrise." Switch it back or replace HOTS with some other track from either of these upcoming releases. 5) Don't just play "Soon." Play "Gates of Delirium." Without Rick, this is an excellent chance with the rest of the Classic lineup to play something from RELAYER. 6) Of course, we love "Close to the Edge." We wouldn't mind at all having this added. But, as much as it hurts me to say it ;-), I'd rather they add "Gates" for instance. I can hold out for CTTE till next tour. There is only so much time (2 and 3/4 hours?) for the show. Thanks for listening (especially any Yes tour people/band members :-) -JJW * * * * * * * * * * ______________________________________________________________________________ = nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE ADDRESSES ============= Notes From the Edge Web Site: http://www.nfte.org Editors: Jeff Hunnicutt - jeff@nfte.org and http://www.cms.uncwil.edu/~hunnicu (New subscriptions, deletions, contributions, questions/comments/criticism) Mike Tiano - mike@nfte.org (Tour and Release dates, appearances, issue layout) Web Design and Programming: Tom Lorenz - tom@nfte.org (NFTE Webmaster: Server/WWW Server problems, additions/corrections to the lyrics & GIFs, and additions/corrections to the rarities list) Ronnen Miller - ronnen@nfte.org (NFTE enhancements and YesWorld Webmaster) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Notes From the Edge PO Box 2721 Redmond, WA 98073-2721 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | WHEN SUBMITTING ANY INFORMATION FOR INCLUSION IN NOTES, PLEASE INCLUDE: | | - your full name | | - sources for any information | | - date and location of interviews, appearances, etc. | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Submissions should be in straight text format with hard line breaks, no | | longer than 80 columns wide. | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED ARTICLES, INTERVIEWS OR LIKE MATERIAL UNLESS YOU | | PROVIDE THE EDITORS WITH AUTHORIZATION FROM THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER TO DO SO. | | OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT BE INCLUDED. | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | The Editors retain the right to edit or refuse any submission. | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | The views expressed within Notes From the Edge are the opinions of the | | individual contributors and does not necessarily reflect the views of the | | contributor's provider of the online service, employer, or school. | | These views also in no way reflect the views of the editorial staff unless | | otherwise stated. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ______________________________________________________________________________ = nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ END OF NOTES FROM THE EDGE #189 ______________________________________________________________________________ = nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte nfte = ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
